Event Details

We are proud to present iconic improviser, Karen Nelson in a lecture-demonstration-jam at Emory. Come move, or witness, or do both. All welcome. FREE admission. No reservations required.

“Contact Improvisation (CI) interrogates its history and currency,” facilitated by Karen Nelson, inquires into the evolution of CI as a living, breathing, changing dance form. This platform— part ritual, part performance, and part social club— invites shared investigations of intersectionality, passion, identity, and one’s own history in the form. Archival video documentation of early CI practice and performance will provide a context for one creation myth of this work.

Karen Nelson’s 40-year dance and performance practice has been directly influenced by Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and Lisa Nelson, and their respective work in Contact Improvisation, Material for the Spine and Tuning Scores, and through collaboration with many others in venues around the world.
