Join us for an evening of dance featuring choreography by Julio Medina and guest artist Nadya Zeitlin.
Medina presents a remounting of Ridge (2021), a duet that considers truth, and how we elect to deny it, hide it, accept it, or sometimes not even see it. How do we hide the truth in our bodies? What happens to the body when we hold in the truth? And what does it look like when it gets out?
With the new version of Archs & Textures DWTN Nadya Zeitlin continues her exploration of the unique architectural character of Atlanta’s Central Library, which was designed in Brutalist style by Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer and renovated in November 2021 after being on the edge of demolition. The original inspiration came from the range of shapes found inside and outside of the library — the lattice patterns, the blend of cement and wooden textures, and the monumental staircase structures. Nadya also approaches the building from the humanistic perspective, exploring the feeling of powerlessness and fragility of a huge cement structure awaiting its fate at the hands of people, significantly smaller and brittle physically compared to it.
The concert culminates in desahogo//undrown, a dance work that positions martial arts as practices of resilience, play, and healing. This piece explores concepts of space, time, and identity, using techniques from martial arts to counter and heal from meta/physical attacks imposed by the residues of colonialism on wellness. Featuring a stellar cast of Atlanta dance artists, the work reconsiders martial arts as more than violent practices but as a community of sustainability for the mind, spirit, and body.
