SPRING IN ATLANTA WITH FLAMENCO
A Través is dancing, singing, and cooking during La Feria, with events in Atlanta and Seville, Spain.
Join us on April 10, 17, and 24 for online dance and singing classes, a cooking demonstration, and a chat with our friends in Seville, as we celebrate our connection between flamenco in Atlanta and life in Andalucía.
Every year in Seville, Spain, La Feria de Abril kicks off spring two weeks after an extravagant celebration Easter in the same city. For several days, Seville residents and people visiting the city gather under glowing lights and in the twirls of the ruffles of the traje de flamenco, a confection donned by women at this special time of year. People of all ages dance to live music performances of some of the songs most synonymous with Andalucía, including sevillianas, bulerías, and tangos flamencos.
In 2021, the giant gathering is being replaced by smaller events that adhere to safety guidelines of the COVID-19 pandemic yet still spark spring fever. As part of our online events, we will visit Seville to see what is happening with these alternative events. We will also cook a special dish that is enjoyed during La Feria, and we will see and learn to dance and sing sevillanas.
Here in Atlanta, we began celebrating spring on March 21, when we recorded dance for camera performances at Proctor Creek Trail. Masked and full of hand sanitizer, dancers and musicians gathered for the first time in more than a year, to set visuals for videos that show how we express culture in Atlanta. It was a powerful day full of emotion and joy. We will debut these performances in our online events. Our schedule of events is below.
