Event Details

Every Year. Every Fall. Every October. The 2023 Sabar Rek
Atlanta Conference & Cultural Event takes individuals on a cultural ride of
the folkloric art forms of Senegal / the Senegambia region. This annual 3-day educational and cultural
arts experience, curated by artist and culture bearer, Assane Kouyaté, uncovers ngeweul (griot) dance
and musical
exclusive to Wolof, Serer and diverse ethnic groups. Kouyaté assembles a masterful
team of US-based indigenous Senegalese artists to help preserve and enhance the
traditional experience.

The conference is unique due to its focus on SABAR rather
than djembe art forms. The term sabar has multiple meanings – referring to the
dance style, the family of drums played with one hand and a stick, as well as
the communal event. Conference
kick-off is Fri Oct-6 and extends till Sun Oct-8, providing 15 opportunities
for traditional dance/drum – 12 dance sessions (sabar, kutiro, serer, serouba)
and 3 drum (sabar), an artisan market featuring South Fulton vendors, and a small & intimate late-night community gathering – SUPPER & SABAR – a
celebration of diversity through food, fashion and music
. Cost/Session: $22 Gen Adm | $13 Online Special (Youth, Seniors,
Person w/Disabilities, Community Partners and South Fulton Residents-City
