Event Details
This class introduces students to the basics of creating burlesque dance choreography for an audience. Students will learn how to break down a song easily, and look for moments to peel, move, fill, and WOW! – whether or not they are strong dancers.
This class will also provide basic introduction to the choreographic/creative process and its relevance to other areas of performance. Students will learn to ask themselves questions and utilize their own creative processes, providing opportunities and challenges that stretch the imagination about what they can explore, say, represent, and ask through their movement choices. Students will learn approaches to notating choreographic concepts and methods for critical analysis of their own numbers.
This course is for all ranges and experience levels. Bring a pen, notebook, and a number or idea you are working on.

The history of Burlesque is a vast and surprisingly long one. Though most consider Burlesque as an art form to be purely American with its start being 70 years ago at best, it actually began long before then, and is deeply rooted in the class system of western civilization.
Burlesque History & Ethics covers a vast swath of the history of “common man’s” theatre, and why it is such an important part of western culture. We will then explore the ethical impact this form of theatrical storytelling has on society today and what its moral and political implications are for the future.
